Mathew “Mat” Fraser (born 1990) is an American professional CrossFit athlete known for winning the 2016 and 2017 CrossFit Games and taking second place at the 2014 and 2015 CrossFit Games. After a strong performance in 2014, and the retirement of 4-time defending champion Rich Froning Jr., he was a favorite to win in 2015, but was edged out in the final event by Ben Smith. The following year, Fraser took first place by a commanding margin, and Smith took second.

Mathew Fraser earned the title of Fittest Man on Earth at the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games. The victory was three years in the making, after he took back-to-back second-place finishes in 2014 and 2015. In 2014, Fraser’s debut Games appearance, he earned the Rookie of the Year award for his efforts. Known for his hatred of second place, Fraser was unsatisfied with his consecutive silver finishes, and though he won the worldwide Open in 2015 and swept his region (EAST) with a dominate performance in 2016, it wasn’t until he stood atop the podium at the Games in 2016 that he showed signs of celebration. A former U.S. Olympic Weightlifting team hopeful, with a return from major back surgery in 2011, retired from his weightlifting career and has been a CrossFit athlete since 2012.

If there’s a new gold standard in Men’s CrossFit, it’s name is Mathew Fraser. After two consecutive runner-up finishes in 2014 and 2015, the 5’6” Vermont native finally staked his rightful claim as the “Fittest Man on Earth” in 2016, winning the men’s individual competition by the largest margin in Reebok CrossFit Games history. A year later, he silenced any remaining doubters by defending his crown and breaking his own record–outpacing his closest competitor by a whopping 216 points.

Fraser, a former Junior National Weightlifting Champion, has excelled to the top ranks of CrossFit just four years after first picking up the sport. Named “Rookie of the Year” at his debut Games in 2014, he grabbed bigger headlines for earning a podium spot right between legends Rich Froning and Jason Khalipa. Along with his back-to-back titles at the Games, Fraser has also collected four consecutive 1st place finishes at the Northeast/East Regional,, and he’ll be the odds-on favorite to win everything again in 2018.

In between traveling the globe for competition these past few years, Mat also found time to study mechanical engineering at the University of Vermont. With his work ethic and personal drive, Fraser is primed to succeed in his pursuits long after his competitive CrossFit days are behind him.

By thirteen Fraser won his first national title and in 2009 he was the junior national champion in Olympic weightlifting. Injury took him away from weightlifting competitively until 2012.

Fraser began lifting again at Champlain Valley CrossFit in 2012, periodically hitting a WOD. Noticing the advantage he had with an Olympic weightlifting background, Fraser continued with CrossFit. In the 2013 CrossFit Open, Fraser qualified for the North East Regionals. He went on to place 5th overall, missing the 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games by two spots. The rookie athlete came back for the 2014 CrossFit open with a 1st place win at the East Coast Championship and experience under his belt. Mat Fraser qualified for the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games at the Northeast Regionals. He went on to place 2nd at The Games in 2014.

With a fire ignited in Fraser, he swept the 2014/2015 competition season placing first at the Crush Games, Granite Games, and the East Coast Championships. In the 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games, Fraser placed 2nd for the second year in a row. Fraser was not satisfied, “Second place sucks,” the athlete said in an interview with CrossFit Head Quarters following the games.
