Tia-Clair Toomey (born 22 July 1993) is an Australian weightlifter and CrossFit Games athlete. She competed in the women’s 58 kg event at the 2016 Summer Olympics and came in 14th. Also competing in the CrossFit Games, she was the winner of the 2017 CrossFit Games after being the runner-up in 2015 and 2016.

She qualified for the Olympics after just 18 months of serious weightlifting training after learning by participating in CrossFit. She is also an established CrossFit Games competitor and has finished second overall in both the 2015 and 2016 CrossFit Games. Since she participated in the Olympics less than a month after finishing the 2016 CrossFit Games, she garnered some criticism for not being a focused sport-specific athlete like many she qualified over.

Many CrossFit writers defended Toomey’s performance citing that she did as well as could be expected from any competitor within the Australian Weightlifting Federation, a nation that only qualified to bring two weightlifting athletes to Rio (compared to an exceptional weightlifting federation, such as China, that qualified to bring ten athletes).

Queensland native Tia-Clair Toomey rocked the CrossFit world after taking second at the 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games as a rookie—after only two years of CrossFit—and earning the distinction of Rookie of the Year. She proved it was no fluke with another second-place finish in 2016. Though her background is in track and field, she became Australia’s top-ranked female weightlifter in 2016, qualifying for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she snatched 82 kg (180.7 lb.) and clean-and-jerked 107 kg (235.8 lb.) for 14th place in the 58-kg category. Owner of CrossFit Gladstone in Queensland, she is the only CrossFit athlete to have competed in the CrossFit Games and the Olympics in the same year.

Benchmark stats:

Twenty-four-year-old CrossFit athlete Tia-Clair Toomey is the fittest woman on earth. The jockey-sized 158cm Queenslander won the 2017 CrossFit games in Madison, Wisconsin with her muscle-packed 58 kilo body. But it was a mindset change that really made the win possible

Toomey had finished runner-up the previous two years in the contest in which athletes compete in workouts involving a mix of aerobic, strength, and gymnastics elements. There are also elements which CrossFitters don’t normally do as part of their regular training, such as obstacle courses and more.

Toomey, who finished 14th in her weightlifting division at the Rio 2016 Olympics, conquered all. Just. Her grand total after six events was 994 points, which edged her ahead of compatriot Kara Webb, on 992.

Toomey is the first Australian to win an individual CrossFit Games competition. The athlete has an intense training regimen featuring everything from running to lifting weights. Before her Olympic weightlifting and CrossFit journey began, 24-year-old Australian Tia-Clair Toomey was a runner. Now, she’s walking away from the CrossFit platform with a first place medal for the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games held in Madison, Wisconsin — making her the “fittest woman on earth.”
