Yoga is a set of practices, which came from the ancient India. It is divided into a lot of different schools, and goals in various religious, for example, Hinduism and Buddhism. But the two most known types of yoga are:
– Hatha
– Rāja.
It was between 19th and 20th century when the success of Swami Vivekananda convinced gurus to introduce yoga to the West tradition. The Indian culture considers yoga to have a meditative and spiritual value, but to the Western world, it is popular just as normal exercises. What is more, the six major schools of Hinduism include one called Yoga. This school has its own philosophy, very much similar to the Hindu Samkhya.
It is interesting that contemporary studies strive to prove the effects of yoga on human health. Particularly in improving conditions during such diseases: cancer, schizophrenia, asthma, and heart problems. Unfortunately, studies showed that the results are inconclusive. People with cancer weren’t affected at all, but other conditions had reduced risk factors – which means it helped in the psychological healing of the patient.
